In 2006, the Athlone Library opened The Aidan Heavey Collection to the
public. Aidan Heavey assembled one of the finest private libraries in Ireland, known
especially for the very fine condition of its materials, and he and his wife Maureen
donated the collection to his home town of Athlone. The collection includes several
thousand volumes focusing on Irish history, topography and literature. In addition,
documents, prints, drawings and a large collection of related ephemera. The
collection totals more than 16,000 items. Highlights of the collection include strong
material on Oliver Goldsmith; an extensive collection of Douglas Hyde material,
including manuscripts; rare Bibles and prayer books in Irish, including BedelÕs
Irish
Bible
of 1685; and an extensive collection of sixteenth and seventeenth century

The Local Studies Collection is part of the County Westmeath library system and is
located in Westmeath County Library Headquarters, Mullingar.
The Local Studies Collection contains a wealth of books, maps, journals,
newspapers, photographs and ephemera relating to every aspect of life in County
Westmeath, past and present. All books in the collection have a connection to
Westmeath, in terms of authorship or subject matter. Authors represented in the
library collections include: John Broderick, Leo Daly, Alice Dease, J.P. Donleavy,
Desmond Egan, Lawrence Ginnell, Josephine Hart, Marian Keaney, Thomas
Pakenham, Brinsley MacNamara, T.P. OÕConnor, Padraic OÕFarrell, A.J. Stanley,
Michael Walsh, Fr Paul Walsh, Oliver Goldsmith and Christopher Nolan. The
collection also includes directories, almanacs, topographical dictionaries, parish
histories, GAA histories and unpublished works such as thesis and project material.
There are some 3,500 items in this collection.
