Aidan Heavey assembled one of the finest private libraries in Ireland, known especially for the very fine condition of its materials, and he and his wife Maureen donated the collection to his home town of Athlone. The collection includes several thousand volumes focusing on Irish history, topography and literature. In addition, documents, prints, drawings and a large collection of related ephemera. The collection totals more than 16,000 items. The Local Studies Collection contains a wealth of books, maps, journals, newspapers, photographs and ephemera relating to every aspect of life in County Westmeath, past and present. All books in the collection have a connection to Westmeath, in terms of authorship or subject matter.
